Does retinol actually thin your skin?

The confusion

People feel their skin get smoother and a little raw, then assume it’s getting thinner overall. Mechanically it’s the opposite of what’s happening.

What is happening

Retinoids accelerate cell turnover. The stratum corneum (dead surface layer) gets shorter. The dermis (the structural layer underneath) gets thicker over months of consistent use.

The catch

You’re more sun-sensitive while using retinol. SPF 30+ daily is non-negotiable, not optional skincare advice. Skipping it undoes the work.
